In the San Pedro Alcántara vicinity, it is possible to find the remains of a Spanish-Roman villa dating back to the 1st-2nd century A.D. called Villa Romana de Río Verde. Here, a magnificent paved mosaic in very good condition and depicting a jellyfish head as the leitmotif can be found. Also in San Pedro de Alcántara are the remains of the PaleoChristian Basílica of Vega del Mar, discovered in the first years of the 20th century and one of the most important examples in Spain of the PaleoChristian age (4th century).Close to Guadalmina, the Bóvedas ruins, reputed to be unique remnants of Roman baths dating back to the 3rd century and whose singular construction is the subject of research, can also be visited.FESTIVALSAmong the many events to be enjoyed in Marbella, the following merit special attention:The romería or procession to Cruz de Juanar on May 13th,The festivals of the patron saint, San Bernabé, on June 11th and of San Pedro de Alcántara on October 19th, typically Andalusian affairs with their colour and folklore.Another festivity of great interest and one which has successfully preserved its popular, traditional flavour is Virgen del Carmen, which takes place on July 16th and features a procession down to the sea. La Semana Santa or Holy Week The Holy week or Semana Santa, another landmark among Marbella´s cultural activities, has become a religious expression and one of great significance to people in the town. In the cosmopolitan context of this town, nine brotherhoods of the passion surv ive (including those of Nueva Andalucía and San Pedro Alcántara), integrated into the Association of Holy Week Brotherhoods.Palm Sunday begins with the procession of Our Father Jesus of Mercy on his entry into Jerusalem and Holy Mary of Peace and Hope. Notable is his passage by the walls of the ancient castle, the departure and entrance into his Chapel located in the San Juan de Dios Hospital, the benediction of the palms and olives in Plaza José Palomo, and the singing of the children in Bocanegra School to the Statues of the Saints. Easter Monday begins with the procession of Our Father Jesús Atado (the bound one) and Holy Mary the White Virgin to the Column The departure and confinement from the Chapel of Santo Cristo in the Square of the same name and his passage through the streets of the upper area, notably C/ Lobatas and C/Aduar, are particularly significant. Holy Tuesday, Our Father Jesús Cautivo (the Captive) accompanied by Holy Mary of the Incarnation, Santa Marta and Mary make their departure from the Parish Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation. Santa Marta is born by the shoulder bearers, to underline the importance of the passage of this Brotherhood in C/ Virgen de los Dolores and C/ Málaga. Holy Wednesday procession of the Royal, Illustrious and Venerable Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus of Nazareth from the Parish Church of our Lady of the Incarnation, meeting with María Santísima del Mayor Dolor which makes its departure from the Saint Sepulchre Square, official home of this Brotherhood. Notable are the large number of pledges which accompany the penitents throughout the whole route. The meeting of the two floats and its passage through the typical streets of the historic town centre is worth the visit. The brotherhood of Santo Cristo de la Exaltación and María Santísima del Calvario procession departs on Maundy Thursday from the Calvary Chapel. Noteworthy is the descent of the floats from the Chapel and their passage by the ancient castle walls. The Royal, Ancient and Most Excellent Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of Love, María Santísima of Charity and Saint John the Evangelist depart from the Santiago Chapel. A very special moment is the release of a prisoner in the Ronda Bridge Square. An equally moving moment is their departure from the small Brotherhood in Orange Square and the meeting of the three floats at the end of the route.Highly emotive is the procession of silence (the moving of the Reclining Christ), as it departs from the Holy Sepulchre Chapel on its passage through the historical town centre. Good Friday - the Brotherhood of Penitents again set out from the Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, this time with the Reclining Christ accompanied by the Band of Horns and drums from the Legion. Of special interest is their meeting with the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Solitude, one of the oldest in our town, an image with hands intertwined, eyes down and a dagger in the heart. The end of Marbella Holy Week is marked by the resurrection of the Holy Christ statue of the Association of Brotherhoods which sets out from the Parish Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation to the Chapel of the Holy Christ.A special mention is merited by the Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of Forgiveness and Our Lady of Sorrow and Hope of Nueva Andalucía. Their procession departs on Wednesday and Good Friday, while on Palm Sunday there is a live depiction of the Entry into Jerusalem. Notable is the departure of the floats through the narrow archway of the church. San Pedro Alcántara with the Brotherhood of Our Father Jesus of Nazareth and Holy Mary of Solitude have their processions on Palm Sunday with Our Father Jesus entry into Jerusalem “La Pollinica” and Our Lady of Passion. On Maundy Thursday, Our Father Jesus of Nazareth and Our Lady of the Sorrows make their journey through the streets of San Pedro Alcántara town centre. Worthy of note at midnight on Maundy Thursday is the Procession of Silence and on Good Friday the departure of the procession of the Reclining Christ and Our Lady of Solitude, the closing act of Holy Week marked by the Resurrection of the Holy Christ.
